STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) is getting a lot of emphasis after several decades on the back-burner of traditional education. For homeschoolers, especially those dedicated to giving their students hands-on experiences, STEM projects are a fantastic way to engage kids in active learning! More on this in Monday’s post, but for now I’d like to share with you Destin Sandlin’s amazing website, Smarter Every Day. You can browse through his daily offerings there or look for a specific series of videos on various topics.
The thing I like about Destin’s videos are that he explains the scientific principles at work behind each demonstration. He often uses his own children or friends’ kids in his videos, and the explanations he gives are very clear and easy to understand.
Some of the experiments Destin demonstrates definitely fall in the “Don’t Try This at Home!” category, but others are totally do-able in your backyard. (Why does my Mom instinct compel me to add, “Make good choices!” when I know you will?) Plenty of free time on Fridays and weekends, right? 🙂
